Pinoy Prom Guide | 10-Point Plan to Prom Night

Here’s for my TEEN GUY readers.
I have assembled
10 helpful tips for your prep-up for that one big night
So boys, dig in.

1. LOOK the PART
PROMS are generally formal events though some schools adopt certain motifs. None the less, dressing the part is a rule. Never go underdressed or overly done. Strut a tux the way stylish men of the brood do. Decide on what kind of lapel, the number of buttons, color palette and over all look you would like to sport. See this board from my Pinterest account for ideas.

2. BUY vs. RENT
Decide whether you would rather rent or buy a tux. A word of advice though, if you think you have grown, literally grown, into the guy you ought to be, physically, then buying is the best. It is an investment dude.

3. MIND THE FIT
I need not to elaborate do I? FIT means buttoned up, your two fingers would fit into your neckline comfortably; sleeves starts exactly at the shoulders; hems end at the wrist and the ankle - and the trunk gets emphasized.

4. Be the REBEL that YOU ARE
Who says Prom is strictly black and white? Have an affair with colors and probably even with texture, go ahead pick something that would make you standout. You can pick a tux with a silk lapel for example. Just please, don’t wear sneakers – stick with the leather. See here for ideas.

5. Mind the DETAILS
Details make or break an ensemble. Make sure your tie (I’d still go for bow ties), belt, cufflinks and wristwatch contribute to the wholeness of the ensemble. A word of advice, make it simple but significant. Click here for more.

6. Flash FLASHY
Make sure everything that should shine shines – that means clean shoes my boy.

7. Be a MR.SUAVE
Fix your hair, that’s just the message. If you have enough budget, have it done, say a hair spa or hot oil a day or two before the big night.

8. PAR FUM PAR FUM
Formal events call for no cologne or your conventional body spray. This is the time to use that ‘imported’ padala-ni-tita. Use oil based perfumes to make the scent last. Musks and sensual tones are the best choices.

9. PLAY MY BOY, PLAY
Treat your date a bit. A long stemmed rose might be a cliché but it works.

10. Be the perfect GENTLEMAN
I need not to say more do I? On that night be a MAN.

STYLE GUIDE | bottoms

There are a couple of things in a man’s ensemble that make of break a look. And for one, bottoms does a lot of this. A good pair of pants well paired with a complementing top needs just additional accessories, and you’re good to go.

To rock your look, there are two things to complete an ensemble. One, choose a top then match it with good pants. Or (two) do it the other way around. Give your pants the highlight by finding something that would further accentuate it. Accessories, yet again are adages only. Give the focal focus on the two main pieces and everything else follows.

So talking about pants, here are some of GQ’s featured bottoms for the month’s issue. Take a look of what may interest you, and let’s play STYLE.

The DENIM

‘The slimmest jean in Jean Touitou's arsenal of prime raw-denim cuts. The New Cure tapers closely from the knee to the ankle, resulting in a silhouette that works as well with a casual Friday sports jacket as it does a in your weekend wardrobe” –GQ

// available at nordstrom.

This works best with the casual look. Since the weather in the country colder nowadays, pair this up with your flannels (which nerd-chic nowadays love to sport). Looking quite preppy with the comfort of jeans is quite fun. It adds character, too!

If you want more character, pair this with a crispy white v-neck top and put that scarf on. Look Parisian without trying too much! (beat the cold, too!)

Demin is the getting a renewed hype. With the likes of Folded and Hung with their Dare Me to Denim campaign; and the likes of celebrity lifestyle blogger David Guison with his TopMan Denim inspired feature – there really is hype, so to say.

Light CHINOS

It’s a must have, I need not to say much. It’s perfect for work; where slacks are a bore and denims are quite too casual. These are best paired with a pair of boat shoes and basically just any top. Your orthodox buttoned ups are best possible pairs!

available at nordstrom.

SLIM STRAIGHT CUTS

Rock and refined. These pants would look edgy even when paired with a plain top. Add a nice blazer and you can head to a casual date, dine at Resorts World or basically hang out somewhere posh. It has that character in itself.

At the bottom of all these, among these three personally picked bottoms;
Picking yet again what makes you feel comfortable is but the only best advice I can give.

man essentials | with a kick of being pinoy

In life, there are certain staples - things that we certainly can’t live without, and make many things from. Its either we have them, or we are doomed. Take rice for us Filipinos as an example, right? We just can’t have a complete meal without it. But this isn’t a foodie blog so let me shift our thoughts back to staples. Staples, or basics – or standards (what have you) are a few items that we should have.
I call them Man Essentials.

Our closets need not be filled with bulk of clothes - or brands, primarily. It’s the staples, no matter how many or how expensive they are that should be given the prime space. Prime space, my man by the way, is the part of your closet you reserve for items we REALLY HAVE TO USE. This part of your closet keeps your staples, your Man Essentials.

Aside from a good quality, tailored TUX, every guy should have…

Crispy White Top

Although the color has become debatable in the recent years, a crisp shirt is a staple! Alternatives for white include light washed shades of blue. Every man should have this item in a design that is ought to be worn tucked out. Pick one that also has no chest pocket.

White TEE Top

Although I prefer a v-neck top, since it looks sleeker, a rounded white top also does the trick. Keep this one clean and crisp to get that smart look.

A colored, printed TEE top

Anything vintage, navy inspired or whatever genre you prefer you have to have a colored printed tee for party nights or chill coffee dates.

Colored/ Plaid shirt

Something that looks classy on its own or when under a blazer. This is something that one can pull on for a chic nightout or a lounge time at the beach. Its a hard thing to find one that suits both, but local brands like Folded and Hung has some.

Jeans

Your favorite jeans - in dark color, preferably black or navy to almost royal blue is a basic, it’s a modern basic. It’s the very paragon of smart casual look, a jeans and a crisp top under a blazer.

Trousers (we call them Slacks)

Pinoys call it slacks. And we usually prefer dark colored ones, that’s just right! Slacks in black never go out of style. Velvet ones are quite pricey, but they are the ones that look best. Own one!

Chinos
Although the jeans are still the smartest casual looking pants, if you would like to look dapper and preppy, I personally recommend chinos. They look better on us Pinoys because we’re commonly medium built. Koreans and Tokyo fashion has long embraced this, like the high street fashion of the Brits. It’s time we go at par.

Blazer

This isn’t your tux, but it should resemble a suave one. I prefer black since it goes perfectly well with any color. And we Pinoys commonly have mix of a Moreno and Chinito complexion, so it is safer than the preferred grey by the westerners. Also, stick with two-buttoned ones if not the conventional three button.

Varsity Jacket

It is a must have, although you may not look the part of an athlete, it’s better than a hoodie. Hoodies are for boys, we’re no longer boys are we not? It’s time to put on something more smart, yet still coy.

Leather Shoes

Brogues are the best recommendations. Although some might prefer sleep on leather shoes, nothing beats brogues for looking classy. Invest on a good one and make memories with it.

Sneakers/ Loafers

Or add Vans on that. This daily trek shoes greatly depends on your preference. Whatever goes comfy on your toes should also be subtly edgy, so it can pair well with any pants. Stick with basic colors, dark ones or light washed ones for versatility.

BELT

Leathery and classy, something that never goes out of style. Pick one that has a silver head for a safer look. And yes, it still has to go with the color of your leather shoes!

Wrist Watch

Yes, it’s a requirement. Forget about the ring, the necklace or the bracelets but never the watch. A man’s ensemble requires a watch. A classic looking, moderately priced wrist watch is a must have for all men. It is something that one should invest on.

Bows and Ties

These two are a must have. A tie in a crisp color like black, the conventional white, shades of blue or the trendy red should hang in our closets, always ready for wearing. Bowties on the other hand should come in preppy options. With bowties, its either you choose plain, classy ones or go bold and trendy. So it’s good to have both, so when needed, viola.

Good Undies

I need not mention it, but guys, there are undies that are meant for chill hours at your pad and there are those meant for when you are out there busy and working your ass out. Also, it’s a must to keep a couple of undies that goes for special occasions. These are, ehem, what you wear when fun knocks.

Scarf

While the Brits and the New Yorker requires trench coats, we Tropicanos should have scarves for the colder seasons. It is safe (you can remove and stash esily when weather dictates) and can easily be donned even when you only have a tee on. It adds character, and it looks good, trust me I know.

Shades

Yes, you ought to have a pair of tinted specs. I personally prefer Aviator glasses, but each facial shade has a specific design that compliments. See here. Thing is, it’s a must have. It’s a must have after a TGIF night out and you have to get to a Saturday afternoon meeting, it’s a must have when the sun is up, it’s a must have when a road trip calls, when, oh the list goes on.

***

Lastly;
CONFIDENCE and best foot forward, and we’re good to go!

Get the LOOK | a Pinoy Fashion Guide

People judge us according to the way we project, or so to say carry ourselves. It’s a fact and there’s no bending such truth. So if you care enough about how you are perceived, give your LOOK a look. It is no secret that well dressed men radiates power, commands respect and say it, exudes sex appeal. It’s a universal truth. Take it or be left behind.

Basically, men take inspiration from others, or from a certain icon when grooming and grooving. It’s a common mistake though of young Pinoys out there to copy (yes I said copy) a certain culture’s fashion. Although there is nothing wrong liking the Brits, Hipters and many other genres; knowing and letting out one’s own style is the key. Everything else just follows.

Before sticking up with a trademark look and joining a brotherhood of style, there are certain things one should be first certain about. Once certain, it would be easier to Get the LOOK.

WHO ARE YOU?

Basically, answer the question. The answer would tell a lot about what others expect from you. It is not a bad thing to break away from the conventional, that’s the very essence of owning a look, but one’s place in the picture defines what kind of look would look – and suit best. It is easy to play with clothes, provided, your function as a person is considered. Imagine, a rugged looking nurse-aspiring-doctor or an overly polished and prim (in suave tux) rocker – there are just clothes that would best fit ones category. We are not fashion models to try and look different each time; we have to Get the LOOK, our own look.

HOW ARE YOU?

Are you laid back? Prim and proper? Rough and rugged? Sporty and avid? How you behave should rule how you dress up. Rolled up pants would look best with the laid back while tailored seams are best for the prim and proper. Rubber shoes are best worn by avid sport fans while top-siders look perfect on those who live business casual lives. How you should look follows how you move, that’s just it.

WHERE ARE YOU?

This is a cliché. And like most clichés, it is brutally true. A place dictates a code of decorum, an air of conduct that it requires. It is stupid to wear buttoned up silk tops on a bowling night out, right? But why do others do it often? Same thing applies with slippers, nothing against Haviainas but they just won’t fit in Manila Con. The place dictates, period.

With these three things considered. The next challenge would be, putting the overall ensemble. The choices are still wide right? So keep posted…
